How to Use the BLB
What is in the Blue Letter Bible?
The Blue Letter Bible is an Internet site on the World Wide Web. Its address is
http://www.blueletterbible.org.
The Blue Letter Bible contains a basic English Bible: an 18th century version
of the "King James" translation. We have added some study tools to this:
- The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSK) is essentially a
list of verses that pertain to a particular versein other words, a
series of cross-references (311,000 in all).
- Greek and Hebrew versions of the text using original-language
typographythis is helpful for word study and translation.
- Concordance listings for most words showing a list of all
verses in which a given word occursthis is available both for the English
translation and for the original language.
- Lexicon definitions for the original language and a listing
showing the different ways in which specific words have been translated into
English and giving a pronunciation guide.
- Cross reference of Biblical words into six different study
guidesincluding Vine's, Nave's, Torrey's, &c.
- Commentaries for each verse in the Bible, from sources both old
(such as Matthew Henry) and modern (through "conservative" Bible-believing
Pastors and Commentators)includes both text and audio versions.
- Maps and engravingswhich we pray will help the Body study
God's Word.
Altogether, we have added about 85,000 pages of data to the Blue Letter Bible.
Through the use of computer programs, we have interlinked these 85,000 pages
with the verses of the Bible: chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse, or
word-by-word. We have added about 1,200,000 links to integrate all the
information together, allowing effective study of God's word.
How do you use all the above features?
The basic idea is that ALL the features described above are available as you
read the Blue Letter Bible, by clicking various buttons. For almost every verse in the Blue
Letter Bible, there are three things you can do:
- Click on the
button at the far left to see suggested
scriptures that relate to the verse.
- Click on the
button for Greek/Hebrew and concordance/lexicon.
The verse will be re-displayed along with the Greek/Hebrew text. Click on any
English word within the table to see search results. You will see how the
English word is used in the KJV translation, as well as dictionary entries
discussing that word. Or, click on the Strong's number next to the English
word. It will give you a concordance of the usage of the original language
word, and a lexicon entry including a pronunciation guide.
- Click on the
button for a list of all audio, video, and text
commentaries relating to the selected verse.
- Click on the
button for a link to images or maps that pertain to
the chosen passagethis feature will not be available for all verses.
- Click on the
button for different translations; due to copyright
issues and availability, this feature may not be available immediately.
- The verse heading for each verse (such as Jhn 3:16) is itself a
button, which when clicked, provides a list of:
- maps and engravings pertaining to that verse
- audio study guides for this verse
- text commentaries available for that verse.
You may browse through this list, choose one, then click on the View
Commentary button which appears. A new page displaying your choice will then
appear. After viewing/listening to your choice, you may go "back" to the menu
of choices, and make another choice!
There is also a search feature on the home page! Type in a word and click the
Word Search button to see search results for that word (e.g. its place
in Scripture and relavent dictionary entries). Also for more detailed
search features, click the search button on the site's navigation bar.
Thank you for your interest in the Blue Letter Bible and we hope that God
will grant you continual blessing in your studies.
